Q: My New Year's resolutions seem to be losing steam. How do I stay focused?
A: New Year's Eve has always been a time when we think about the changes we want (or need!) to make in our lives, and resolve to follow through on those changes. Although we make resolutions with good intentions, more often that not we go back to old habits too easily.
If you find you're not sticking to your resolutions, you'd be smart to revisit you goals. Here are some common reasons why we don't always stick to our resolutions, and ideas to help you stay on track:

Don't aim too high: It goes without saying that most resolutions are easier said than done. But if you are too ambitious you can be doomed to fail from the start. Instead of making a big statement like "I will lose 10kg by Spring and finally fit into that dress," make a goal that's more attainable, like losing 3 - 5kgs.
Don't overload yourself: It is difficult enough for most people to follow through on one ambitious New Year's resolution, so why do we feel like we need to make so many? For the rest of the year focus on the issue you want to fix most-losing weight, stopping smoking, spending time with your family or going to the gym regularly-and concentrate on that.
Don't do it alone: Some people think that personal goals are best kept to yourself, but telling people can really help. The more people you tell, the more people there'll be to keep you on track and to congratulate you when you succeed!
Reward yourself: Giving yourself a pat on the back or a little reward helps to keep in perspective what you have achieved and the incentive to keep going. If you have resolved to shop less, reward yourself for not buying those shoes by indulging in a good coffee at your favourite café.
Do it when you can: Sometimes simply starting too early can see the end of your good intentions. A great way to accomplish a resolution is to make it at a time of year that suits you, rather than the one dictated by the calendar. Go for a quarter year start, or even from an important date like your birthday.
