Straight Facts

I’ve heard that cola sparkling drinks can damage your bones. Is this true?

This is false. There has been recent concern that phosphorous and caffeine, which are included in cola drinks, may have a negative impact on bone health. In fact, colas contain very little phosphorous. The vast majority - 98% - of dietary phosphorous comes from high-protein foods like meats, cheeses, nuts and grains. In addition, whilst some studies have suggested that caffeine may interfere with calcium absorption, this effect can be neutralised if there is adequate calcium in your diet. Remember, calcium is an important nutrient and it is recommended that children and adults should get more calcium by drinking more milk or consuming other calcium-containing foods or drinks.
