Straight Facts

Caffeinated drinks, including coffee, tea and cola, can help to keep me hydrated.

It’s true - you’ll be pleased to hear that they can. Perhaps you’ve heard otherwise because of older research studies showing that caffeine can have a mild short-term diuretic effect (causing the body to lose water) in people who don’t usually consume it. However, newer studies have shown that this does not happen when people regularly consume caffeine. The most comprehensive study from the US Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine (February 2004) states,"... caffeinated beverages appear to contribute to the daily total water intake similar to that contributed by non-caffeinated beverages." Achieving a healthy balanced lifestyle can be hard. It can be difficult to find balance in the decisions you make every day, but the little choices you make can quickly add up: taking the stairs instead of the lift in the morning, saying no to dessert at lunchtime or high-fat, high kilojoule snacks in the afternoon, and opting to get on the treadmill instead of the couch in the evening. These choices can help shape the way you look, how you feel about yourself, and help you to achieve a more balanced lifestyle.
