Straight Facts

Caffeinated drinks, including coffee, tea and cola, can help to keep me hydrated.

It’s true - you’ll be pleased to hear that they can. Perhaps you’ve heard otherwise because of older research studies showing that caffeine can have a mild short-term diuretic effect (causing the body to lose water) in people who don’t usually consume it. However, newer studies have shown that this does not happen when people regularly consume caffeine. The most comprehensive study from the US Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine (February 2004) states,"... caffeinated beverages appear to contribute to the daily total water intake similar to that contributed by non-caffeinated beverages." Thirsty?

Join the crowd. Your body is constantly losing water - through your breath, through your skin as perspiration, and through urine - so it's critical that it be replaced. Fluids from the beverages you drink and the foods you eat are your body's primary source of water. If you're thirsty, your body's trying to tell you something important: It's time to hydrate.

To learn more about hydration and your body, why not try out our hydration tools.

Q. Why are fluids so important to overall health?

A. Fluids from the beverages you drink and the foods you eat are your body's primary source of water, which it needs to regulate body temperature, keep skin moist, and transport oxygen and other essential nutrients to your cells.
